This group visited Malé atoll Makunudhoo and Ari Atoll Kuramathi. They slept in tents that madivians called 'Bandaha'. The vessels used to take tourists on safari trips include 'Mekano' and 'Isdhoo Muli'. During late 80's safri cruise became common and the number of vessels were increased. Today this concept has matured to offer a variety of choice and comfort for those who wished to spend a holiday in the Maldives onboard a safari boat. There are small cruises ships, namely 'Atoll Explorer' of Universal Enterprises and 'Ocean paradise' of Travelling Maldives. These ships provide all luxury amentities and comforts for their guests. There are ther locally built vessels with modern facilities such as bars, sundecks, diving, hot and cold fresh water, restaurants and discos. After 2 and a half decade of safari operation in the Maldives, there are more than 100 vessels with a bed capacity of about 1484. The government introduced mechanized fishing boats in 1974 and also set up a fish canning plant in the island of Felivaru in the year 1977. A Fisheries Advisory Board was also set up in 1979, which provides guidelines for developing the fisheries sector. The growth of the fisheries sector was further enhanced by the setting up of the Exclusive Economic Zone for fisheries in Maldives. Tourism is another major industry of the country. The government over the recent years has taken major steps to develop the tourism sector. The sector provides both direct and indirect employment to large section of the country's population. There are numerous resort and hotels that have come up over here where the tourists come and stay during their vacations. The opportunities to take part in numerous water-based activities also attract tourists over here. Tourism is the main foreign exchange earner and contributes nearly 20% to the country's GDP or Gross Domestic Product. The growth of the tourism sector also led to the growth of Cottage Industries in the country. Mat weaving, lacquer work and handicrafts have received a lot of spurt and growth over the past few years. Apart from these, other industries that have currently come up in the country include, printing, brick making, garment manufacturing, marine engine repairs, manufacture of PVC pipes and others. The Maldives Economy is growing slowly but steadily. In 1989 the government lifted import quotas and embarked on a policy of liberalization. Certain sectors of trade were liberalized during this time. The Gross domestic product grew at an average rate of 10% in the 1980s, and about 7% in the 1990s. The economy of Maldives has registered a significant growth over the past few years. Maldives Location Maldives, an island country, consists of 1,192 beautiful coral islands spread across 26 natural atolls. It is one of the smallest Asian countries located in the Indian Ocean. The location of Maldives is unique. The country is located on the Indian Ocean to the south of India's Lakshwadeep Islands. It is located to the west of Sri Lanka and extends upto 823 kilometers. It is basically a group of islands situated close to the equator. This accounts for the hot and humid climate of the country. Maldives lies between latitudes 4 degree- 17 North and longitudes 73 degree- 50 East. The islands are located to the north of the Equator. Out of the 1192 islands, only 200 of them are inhabited. The islands are lowlands and none of them rise 6' above sea level. In ancient times, the country was a major trade center because it was located on the marine trade route on the Indian Ocean. Maldives occupies an area, which is slightly more than 1.5 times the size of Washington, D.C. The country has a total coastline of 644 km the northernmost atoll is located around110 km south of India's Minicoy Atoll, 480 km southeast of India's Cape Comorin and 649 km west of Sri Lanka. Male, the capital of the country, is located on the largest island in the Male Atoll. The island measuring nearly 2.5 square kilometers is the largest in the entire chain. Maldives Location accounts for its hot climate. Its location close to the Equator clearly points out to the sun shining over for most part of the year. |
